FINE ART CLASSES
Although students are welcome to enroll in a single session for a “fun art day” we provide an
environment where students can build their art skills over time by attending classes with the same
instructor, and allowing that particular art instructor to delvelop a relationship with each individual
student in order to enhance the learning process. During our art classes, all the students work on the
same type of project at the same time, according to their instructor. However, more skilled students
will be able to embellish their projects as directed by the instructor. Most of the art that is done in the
classes is designed to be completed in the same session. However, we work with various media, such
as pottery clay and paper mache, that might require the student to continue working on the art in a
subsequent class. The students may leave projects that are either wet or that they are still working on
at the school. Each art project may use a variety of skills, however they will generally fall into one of
the following categories:
- Painting with various types of paint
- Drawing—charcoal pencils, oil pastels, colored pencil
- Sculpture making
- Inks and print-making
- Jewelry making
- Pottery clay
- Mixing plaster of Paris and painting it
- Using objects from nature to make art
- Decoupage
- Paper Mache
LANGUAGE ARTS / SPANISH CLASSES & FRENCH CLASSES
We have three Spanish instructors, who are all university educated & native speakers of Spanish.
Children learn by listening and repeating in an interactive environment that encourages children to
speak out loud. We have Toddler Spanish classes, as well as classes for older students and adults.
Our Beginning Spanish classes assume no prior knowledge of the Spanish language. Our "Know
Some Spanish" classes assume that the student has studied some Spanish before, and has already
mastered numbers, colors, basic greetings and words. The "Know Some Spanish" class teaches the
students to put together short phrases and sentences in Spanish. Our more advanced classes teach
grammar, and current students at this level are able to write paragraphs in Spanish. We currently have
6 different levels of Spanish for children, and students ranging from 2 to 14 and a separate Spanish
course for adults.
We also offer one afternoon of French classes. The instructor is college educated and trained in
teaching French to English speaking students.
DRAMATIC ARTS / ACTING FOR KIDS
Drama is fun, fosters self-esteem, increases discipline and concentration while encouraging creative
self expression. Performing arts activities provide highly motivational learning experiences through
which children learn by "becoming." This exciting, natural approach to learning will encourage children
to explore and develop their talents and abilities. Students will create the props, backdrops and
scenary. They will help with the development of the story line for the show, learn a script, and will
perform in a show for parents and friends every 6-8 weeks of class. Dramatic Arts or "Acting for Kids"
classes are for ages 4 1/2 to 6, 6 to 8, and 8 to 12.
MUSIC THEORY and LEARNING TO PLAY PIANO
We have 3 music instructors, who all graduated from or are graduating with a degree in Music
Education or Music/Performing Arts. We have a maximum of 4 students per class, grouped by age and
capability, and students learn to read music, learn rhythm and scales, and play songs on the piano.
We have a piano at our school, and children need to practice at home. Private lessons also available.
